I found this little quiz on Quizfarm.com, and with “Potter craze” hitting everyone with the release of the book, ”Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows”, I decided to join in the festivities and take the quiz (on top of buying the book). Ok, maybe I shouldn’t have described the quiz as “little”, because it’s actually quite long – 112 questions in total. But at the end of all that, I ended up with this;

You scored as Remus Lupin, You’re a calm, cool, optimistic person who doesn’t dwell on the bad but looks more deeply into the good. You’re wise and know much about the world, and though you teach your lessons to others, react humbly when complimented on your intelligence. You’ve suffered a lot in your life but are extremely accepting of it all and suffer inwardly. You’re a great friend to have as you’re gentle and caring.

Remus Lupin; not too shabby at all. At least I’m not being likened to Lord Voldemort or something like that…

And did you see that?! I’m “wise”, “gentle” and “caring”! Hahaha!

Happy Birthday!

Ok, I gotta admit that I kinda forgot that her birthday was this month, until we joined the rest of the CSS community at Vincent’s Uncle’s house to celebrate the birthdays of all the July birthday girls/boy. But that’s just it – it WAS this month! Well, it still is this month, but it’s over already. It was on the 1st. We’ve celebrated her, Shareen and Salimah’s birthdays late last month, so I guess it’s forgiveable…

I can already hear people shouting; “EXCUSES!”

And I also didn’t know that Felicia, Lianne and Teresa’s birthdays were this month as well. To come to think of it, I haven’t spoken to them a lot since I got out of Junior College, except for those times we met briefly during the FOC. Oh well, I guess I’ll see a lot more of them after term starts.

But for now, I just finished watching “Psych” on Star World. It’s this dramedy series that revolves around Shawn Spencer (James Roday), whose heightened observation skills allow him to fool the police into thinking that he’s a psychic. Along with his long-suffering sidekick (… Psychic… Hey, they rhyme!), Burton ’Gus’ Guster (Dule Hill), he helps the police solve crimes. You’re probably thinking that it’s a silly concept for a show, because it actually is. But that’s why the show is so funny. Roday’s character gets to indulge in bizarre and silly behaviour in order to feign visions and keep up his image as a psychic, and Gus’ constant reluctance to follow Shawn in executing his sometimes preposterous plans (he always goes along with those plans eventually) makes you wonder why he doesn’t just abandon Shawn as a friend altogether. It’s a fun show, great to watch.

Fiji Barbeque

I woke up this morning with my throat recoiling from the effects of yesterday’s barbeque - with Fiji again - at Nick Lee’s house, which involved some surprisingly nice food that was also surprisingly charred. So now, I’m about to read “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” with a sore throat, not that I’m gonna read the book aloud or anything though.

And I think “7th Grade Pig” is becoming our official Fiji game, thanks to Yvonne, because I’m struggling to remember any outing where we didn’t play that game, except for the Taize outing. Taize is cool. But Nick Lee trashing me in the squash court on the same day; not so cool. Anyway, for the uninitiated, “7th Grade Pig” is a modified version of “Heartattack”, except instead of putting our hands on top of each other when a person acquires a complete set and shouts “HEARTATTACK!!!”, the person silently puts his/her hand on his/her nose. At that point everybody else has to put his/her hand on his/her nose as well. Your own nose, not that person’s nose, although that would make for some really memorable photo opportunities. And the last person to do so, will be promoted up one pig level. The first person who reaches level 7 loses the game. Then there’s this whole other thing about people/pigs on a lower level not being able to talk to pigs on a higher level, which is actually the fun part of the game, but I’m too lazy to type all that down.

It’s a bit sad that Nick Lee’s going away tomorrow night for a whole month on his Australian tour. The dude’s going backpacking around Australia. Alone. The guy’s got guts, ’cos personally, just the thought of being alone in an alien environment for a month is scary enough.

Breakfast in Bed? Or How About Some Sushi?

Have you always wanted to breakfast in bed in the morning, every morning? Or maybe in the afternoon, or at night? Well, you can! You can’t eat it, but you can still have it in bed;

Or if breakfast isn’t your favourite meal of the day, how about some sushi?

Alright, fine, enough of the lame advertising already. But aren’t they cute? They’re pillows! I found them at the Sofa Garden website. They’ve even got cigars, wine bottles and cupcakes - among other things – all in pillow-form! And that pancake thing up there is actually a 4-piece pillow set, which includes the pat of butter on top of the pancake stack.

Mmm…

Now I suddenly have a craving for some REAL pancakes…

Formula 1 Fanatic

So last week, for some reason, I was looking through the abysmal mess that is my cupboard. Looking through, not searching through, because it was the previous searchings through that made the cupboard so messy in the first place. Anyway, I was looking through it when I came across this book I never got myself to finish reading; “Formula 1 Fanatic”. Not that it was bad or anything, the timing just wasn’t right. The “A” Level exams, then Army, and by the time that was over, I’d forgotten about books already.

So I found the book, and started to read it. “Formula 1 Fanatic”, authored by Koen Vergeer. It was first published in dutch, but since I didn’t understand dutch (and I still don‘t), I bought the English version, translated from the dutch version by David Colmer, who did a brilliant job with the translation, by the way. Ok, I know what you’re thinking; “how apt”, right? Me reading a book about myself…

But no, it wasn’t about myself. But if I were born 20 years earlier than my actual birthdate, it could have been. The book is essentially the history of Formula 1 through the eyes of a fan – Koen Vergeer himself. From the blood sport that it was in the 1950s, to 2002, where it had transformed into a commercialised industry, Vergeer summarises the history, passion and intrigue of Formula 1, add his own thoughts, and puts them all into a neat 300-page paperback. But I wouldn’t call it a summary, because, as short as the book may be, it is filled with so much detail and emotion. Whether he’s describing the events of Imola 1994, that incredible battle between Gilles Villeneuve and Rene Arnoux in 1979, or all those times when a Williams racing car was fitted with faulty wheel nuts, every F1 fan will be able to relate to everything that’s written in that book.

Which doesn’t mean that everybody else would, because if you don’t know who Juan Manuel Fangio, Gilles Villeneuve, Ayrton Senna, or Michael Schumacher are, you probably won’t understand what you’re reading. Then again, if you don’t know who Michael Schumacher is, you’ve probably died 20 years ago.

To sum it up, it’s a great book for any Formula 1 fan. And there’s one line in the book which I found rather interesting. In one of the chapters, titled “The Point of Formula One”, he writes;

“The point of Formula One? Formula One is completely pointless, just like art. Formula One is art.”
